GENTRY, Ark. (MarketWatch) — As Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s namesake U.S. chain battles eight straight quarters of negative same-store sales and higher gasoline prices, the retailer is hoping a test concept using less than 10% of the size of its regular stores can help rejuvenate some of its growth.
In the rural town of Gentry, Ark., with a population of about 3,000 and about 45 minutes’ drive away from Wal-Mart’s Bentonville-based headquarters, the world’s largest retailer WMT -1.38% will open one of its first two Walmart Express stores on June 8.
