MOHALI: As another academic year passes, government schools in Mohali have cut a sorry figure yet again as barring one, no other student from any state government-funded school in the entire district managed to get in the top-100 students in Class-XII Punjab School Education Board ( PSEB) results, which were declared on Monday.

However, private schools fared comparatively better with two students making it to the merit list with a state-wide ranking of 38 and 142. Gurpreet Singh secured a ranking of 38 is a student of Paragon Senior Secondary School, Sector 71, Mohali and Gurkamal Singh, who ranked 142, is a student of Sant Ishar Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 70, Mohali.

Speaking to TOI, Gurpreet Singh said, ''I am very happy with the results. My perseverance and hard work have finally paid off. I aspire to be a mechanical engineer and have been taking tuitions to crack Common Entrance Test (CET).''

His father, Narinderjit Singh, who is a carpenter by profession, said that he was extremely proud of his son. Although, he thought that his son spent all his time behind books and did not get enough physical activity, he was happy that Gurpreet was progressing very well towards his dream of becoming a mechanical engineer.

The only government school student to have made it to the top-100 list is Ramandeep Kaur, a student of Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Kurali, who secured a ranking of 91.

The abject condition of the schools in Mohali district is testament to the fact that no student has made it to the top hundred in the merit list for the last five years.

Most of the government schools in the district lie in a poor state, with the state government more than willing to allot land to private schools, colleges and universities rather than improve the condition of their own schools. Vacancies for the posts of teachers have been lying untouched for the past many years and all that the state government has done on this end is promise the recruitment of more teachers and then completely forget about it.Read more
